Overview

Through a combination of in-class discussions, real-life venture case studies and a venture simulation, we learn and immerse ourselves on the topics of venture innovation, business model and leadership development, venture financing, and growth strategy. The simulations, originally developed at Stanford and Harvard University, help us experience the dynamics of a business venture and the challenges of raising money, leading the organization, and building wealth for the founders and stakeholders. The examples include companies that went from a lab idea to market and self-sustaining initiatives developed at UC San Diego. Our goal is to develop the creative, strategic and critical thinking skills characteristic of an innovative, opportunity-driven, and entrepreneurial leader.

Class Schedule: All classes are virtual via ZOOM from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

Course Materials:
The class is mainly an action-oriented class with reference articles, books, videos, made available on the Program portal site.

Note regarding Class Simulations:
We will be using two simulations: A new venture simulation from Stanford University (played in teams of 2-3 over a 10 day window starting Session 2) and a leadership simulation from Harvard University (played in teams of 5 on Session 4). It will be useful to interact with your colleagues to form teams for these simulations.

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Integrate strategic, creative, and critical thinking skills needed to be an innovative, opportunity-driven, and entrepreneurial leader.
  2. Discuss the fundamentals in health sciences care delivery and operations management.
  3. Internalize and incorporate key components necessary to construct a business proposal/presentation for an innovative idea.
  4. Discuss core leadership skills necessary to guide innovative pursuits in turbulent environments.
  5. Describe resources to engage with innovative local business activities and leaders.

AAPA: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. Pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing education for pharmacists coursework which meets the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and is accepted as continuing education by the Medical Board of California.

Psychologists: The California Board of Psychology recognizes and accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ for license renewal. Psychologists outside of California should check with their state and local boards to ensure that ACCME accredited activities are acceptable for renewal.
