Overview

The UC San Diego Simulation Training Center offers a one-day simulation training course in anesthesia crisis management. We are endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) and are a part of its Simulation Education Network (SEN). With this endorsement, UC San Diego joins an elite group of over 47 centers nationwide. We have undergone a rigorous review of our facilities, personnel, and curriculum to receive ASA endorsement as a certified MOCA Simulation Center.

Simulation education is an innovative training style that enables the physician anesthesiologist to practice problem-solving, communication, and procedural skills in a setting that mimics the real clinical experience of an operating room, intensive care unit, and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Our courses feature multiple unique cases written by us and tailored to our participants based on their practice environment and subspecialties. All participants will be the primary anesthesiologist in one simulation case and serve as observer or back-up anesthesiologist in the other cases. We provide a safe learning environment with formally-trained simulation instructors who are active UC San Diego anesthesia faculty.

Accreditation
The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine designates this Live Activity for a maximum of
5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ABA MOC II: This activity contributes to the CME component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s redesigned Maintenance of Certification in AnesthesiologyTM (MOCA®) program, known as MOCA 2.0®. Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for a list of all MOCA 2.0 requirements.

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) MOCA 2.0

The only definitive source for information about ABA Certification, Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® (MOCA) is the ABA itself.  Please consult the ABA website, for detailed MOCA® requirements and for questions related to MOCA 2.0. MOCA® and Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® are registered trademarks of The American Board of Anesthesiology, Inc.

The following is based on our current understanding of ABA requirements.

Under the current system of MOCA® 2.0 participating in a MOCA® Simulation Course at an ASA-endorsed simulation program (including the Stanford Center for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning) will count for significant credit for Part IV of MOCA®.  Attending the MOCA Course counts for 20 Part IV points; conducting and reporting on a Practice Improvement Plan based on experience in the Course provides an additional 5 points. Currently 25 points are needed per 5-year period, and simulation may be used to accrue Part IV points in both 5-year portions of the 10-year MOCA® cycle.

As per the table found here, there are many other means of acquiring MOCA Part IV credits, but the MOCA Simulation Course at an endorsed program offers on the order of 3 points per hour whereas most other activities offer only 1 point per hour.

The registration form for this activity is currently unavailable.

DIRECTIONS

Parking
To park in the South Parking Structure (type in “Osler Parking Structure” for GPS), you will need to purchase a “D” One Day permit OR “N/W” Night/Weekend permit (cost: $5/day) which I highly recommend you do ahead of time online at: https://ucsd-transportation.t2hosted.com/Account/Portal
OR,
on ParkMobile app by using the code '4762'. On the weekends, a “D” permit and “N/W” (Night/Weekend) is valid all day in any non-reserved A, B, S parking space in the South Parking Structure unless otherwise restricted by sign, such as a sign that would say "A permit only 24/7 in this parking space". Please observe all parking signs and do not park in “V” that has time restriction (2 or 4 hour limit) as you may get citation if you go over time limit.
