Overview

Are you a medical or nursing educator seeking new curricular innovations? Lead with Compassion is a workshop for change-makers like you. Join us for a 2.5 - day training in La Jolla, CA, that equips experienced and aspiring healthcare educators and artists with the tools to enhance their leadership, facilitation and professional performance in medical settings and beyond. Through an interactive curriculum based in arts and humanities, this immersive session uncovers and develops your authentic style and helps build your communication toolbox to become more adaptable when speaking with patients, students, funders, the media—and even your own family. Learning will occur alongside clinicians as well as artists who have an interest in teaching in healthcare. You will participate in discussions, innovative exercises, roleplay, and written reflections to increase your skill set and wellness. Our overarching goal is to rewire the way healthcare providers think about communication in medicine, and address the importance of awareness, and self-compassion.

This deep-dive experience can serve as a stand-alone opportunity or become your first step as a trainer to bolster your facilitation skills and learn ways of integrating these lessons into your curriculum. Our scaffolded program includes subsequent interactive “booster” sessions on Zoom, and online modules with facilitation guides for integration into the classroom. Join us at the Center for Compassionate Communication and help move the needle as a global community.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize the value behind compassionate communication in medicine
  2. Identify aspects of my identity that influence personal perspectives
  3. Discover ways to lead communication encounters based on the needs of the listener
  4. Analyze and practice the value of perspective-taking in an emotional conversation
  5. Recognize the ladder of inference and concepts of psychological safety.
  6. Practice dealing with emotion through roleplay.
  7. Practice using inquiry to build connections in a feedback scenario
  8. Listen to uncover another person’s story.
  9. Practice finding a third story to move out of conflict.
  10. Recognize the difficulty of describing emotion.
  11. Practice ordering information with the headline.
  12. Practice emotional encounter through role-play.
  13. Reflect on challenges that hinder communication in emotional situations.
  14. Describe successful techniques used in the past.
  15. Expand the capacity of awareness for the self and others.
  16. Practice attunement through roleplay.
  17. Evaluate the role of the bystander.
  18. Describe concrete actions in the face of injustice.
  19. Develop skills in narrative humility.

Accreditation
The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 16.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 


Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.
