Overview

This course will provide an overview of current and emerging therapies for head and neck cancers, including new treatment paradigms incorporating immunotherapy as well as new treatment standards for radiation therapy and surgical treatment. This will include specific discussion of integration and sequencing of therapies in a multidisciplinary care model.

Topics discussed will include:

  • Surgical therapy for oropharynx cancer.
  • De-escalation strategies for oropharynx cancer.
  • Alternatives to cisplatin for older and medically unfit patients with locoregionally advanced head and neck cancer.
  • Novel Therapeutics for Recurrent/Metastatic Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify the indications for primary surgical therapy for oropharynx cancer.
  2. Describe de-escalation strategies for oropharynx cancer.
  3. Summarize evidence supporting alternatives to cisplatin and the rationale for newer treatment strategies being tested in clinical trials.
  4. Review current best practices, about active clinical trials and emerging therapies in the pipeline for recurrent/metastatic head and neck cancer.
