Overview

“Hematology-Focused POCUS Training”, presented by UC San Diego School of Medicine, is an online curriculum (6 hours) developed to provide training in POCUS to evaluate deep venous thromboembolism (DVT) and various manifestations of hematologic conditions. The main objective of the online course is to enable physicians and other care providers to use POCUS as a POC imaging tool to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic conditions. The course will cover imaging fundamentals and basic physics of ultrasound, the scope of POCUS, vascular anatomy and sono-anatomy as well as equipment considerations in respect to handheld devices. The course also informs how to interpret images in the setting of a case-based approach

Experts will provide lectures and case presentations. This program has been developed to provide a comprehensive introduction to POCUS, augmenting the hands-on classroom courses. Hands-on training will be provided in a separate offering as an extension of this online course.

This online program is enduring and be accessed anytime.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe POCUS basics
  2. Identify vascular anatomy of the neck, upper and lower extremities, in addition to splenic/hepatic vasculature to evaluate for venous thromboembolism
  3. Identify basic lung and heart structures to evaluate for pleural and pericardial effusions
  4. Identify intrabdominal landmarks such as kidney, spleen, liver, aorta, vena cava
  5. Apply standard POCUS transducer positions for the vascular anatomy and intrathoracic/intra-abdominal structures
  6. Describe the most common artifacts and pitfalls during joint ultrasound scanning

Accreditation

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AAPA:
AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 9.75 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.

Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (report up to 9.75 hours of credit and list "CME Category 1" as the provider number).

Additional Information

Cultural & Linguistic Competency and Implicit Bias
Continuing medical education (CME) providers are required by state Assembly Bills 1195 and 241, and the standards created by the California Medical Association (CMA), to include components that address cultural and linguistic competency and implicit bias in CME activities. The planners and presenters of this activity has been asked to provide meaningful consideration of these standards in the selection and presentation of content.  Additional information and resources are available on the UC San Diego CME website.

Audio / Video Consent
By registering for this program, I acknowledge that this event may be audio and/or video recorded for future use or distribution. Any engagement I have during the presentation (audio, video, chat, Q&A submission, etc.) will be captured and included. Participant microphones and cameras are generally disabled by default, and can always be manually disabled by participant. Depending on the type of event, publication of the recordings might be on a publicly available website or on an access-restricted site. By registering for this event, I give UC San Diego the right to use my name, voice, image, written text, or video footage without compensation and waive the right to inspect or approve any document in which these appear.

Covid-19 Health & Safety
We follow state and local guidelines and protocols related to COVID-19 safety measures. Due to the high risk for transmission in indoor settings, attendees may be required to wear a facemask, regardless of vaccination status. Individuals who fail to comply will not be able to participate. In such a situation, no refunds of registration fees or other venue/travel related expenses will be provided. The risk of spreading COVID-19 is decreased when all parties are vaccinated. Vaccination or negative COVID-19 test result verification, remains an important strategy to reduce transmission.  We expect all attendees of in-person activities to be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, or agree to take a COVID-test within 48 hours of the start of the event. All attendees should be prepared to provide evidence of vaccination status, or negative test results, if asked to do so by activity organizers. We reserve the right to update COVID related expectations at any time, should local and state guidelines change and prevailing COVID rates increase.
