Medical Education Grand Rounds: Teaching and Assessing Communication Skills in the Post-Pandemic Clinical Environment

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine Medical Education Grand Rounds is a monthly series that will cover valuable topics for medical educators. Each session will be viewable through ZOOM and will rotate through all our major teaching centers. The target audience for this course includes medical school faculty who teach students, residents, and fellows.

Description:  
Communication in the health care setting has significant implications for the safety, engagement, and well-being of patients and physicians yet evidence shows that communication training is variable or lacking in medical education. Physician-patient communication presents a vulnerable point in patient care and this was heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. This session will review these new challenges and describe effective educational and assessment techniques for patient communication in the post-pandemic milieu.

AAPA: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 1.00 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.

Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (report up to 1.00 hours of credit and list "CME Category 1" as the provider number).

Pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing education for pharmacists coursework which meets the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and is accepted as continuing education by the Medical Board of California.

Psychologists: The California Board of Psychology recognizes and accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ for license renewal. Psychologists outside of California should check with their state and local boards to ensure that ACCME accredited activities are acceptable for renewal..

American Board of Pathology (ABPath): The activity has been registered to offer credit in the American Board of Pathology’s Continuing Certification program on activity materials. This Lifelong Learning (CME) activity enables the participant to earn up to 1.00.

American Board of Surgery (ABS): Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME requirement of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.

Cancellation Policy:  The full course tuition is refundable, less $50 if your cancellation is received in writing one week prior to program start date. No refunds will be allowed after this date.
