Overview


Join Dr. William Pearse, MD to discuss clinical management strategies for patients with acute and chronic venous thromboembolic disease.

Topics discussed will include:

  • Core Concepts - Review of foundational concepts pertinent to the coagulation cascade, venous anatomy, and pathophysiology of thrombogenesis
  • Define the Clot - Outline processes for clinical evaluation of DVT/PE
  • How do we treat and how long? - Discuss medication management strategies, dosages, and duration of therapy considerations for acute VTEs in special patient populations
  • When to refer? - Review current literature regarding VTE management with multidisciplinary care clinics involving interventional radiology and surgical subspecialties
  • Special Scenarios – Examine anticoagulation strategies for rare vascular beds, distal deep veins, and superficial veins


Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Accurately define typical venous anatomy, principles of coagulation, and foundational science of thrombosis.
  2. Summarize how to accurately and expediently diagnose VTEs.
  3. Describe indications for potential involvement with interventional and/or surgical subspecialties
  4. Recognize current anticoagulation medications, dosages, and durations of therapy for patients with VTE.
  5. Discuss the use of shared decision making in VTE management.
