Overview

The UC San Diego Reimage Center, part of the Department of Surgery’s newly established Comprehensive Center for Organ Donation Research, Innovation, and Education, is thrilled to announce its inaugural symposium on Friday, September 20th. This one-day event will convene experts and stakeholders from the organ donation and transplantation community to address the ambitious goal set by the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN) of achieving 60,000 deceased donor organ transplants by 2026—a 20% increase for every transplant center in the country. The symposium will focus on the Center’s four key pillars: Research and Innovation, Health Policy, Access and Equity, Compassion, Mindfulness and Burnout, and Education. Through this gathering, the Center aims to position itself as a leader in innovation and best practices, fostering collaboration and generating actionable strategies to meet and exceed this critical goal. The agenda, featuring UC San Diego speakers and national subject matter experts, is being finalized, and the event promises to be a cornerstone in reimagining the organ donation and transplantation system.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Analyze the logistical, financial, and performance-related factors that impact the implementation of improved practices at transplant centers.
  2. Evaluate the current operational processes at their centers and identify specific areas for improvement in line with national transplant goals.
  3. Develop actionable strategies to navigate logistical, financial, and performance-related challenges in order to enhance the overall performance of their transplant programs.
  4. Design a comprehensive plan for a sustainable infrastructure that supports the growth to 60,000 deceased donor transplants annually.
  5. Apply innovative strategies to enhance the quality of transplant-related care within the proposed infrastructure.
  6. Assess the effectiveness of the developed plan in meeting both growth targets and quality improvement goals for transplant programs.
  7. Formulate a detailed plan of action to address national needs in organ donation and transplantation.
