Overview

Orchestrating Change is an award-winning documentary that powerfully redefines perceptions of individuals living with mental illness through the lens of music and community. The film chronicles the inspiring journey of the world’s only orchestra created by and for people with mental health challenges. It showcases how music, collaboration, and purpose can transform lives, reduce stigma, and foster healing.

This course offers a unique opportunity for participants to view the documentary and engage in a meaningful dialogue with the film’s creators—Margie Friedman (in-person) and Barbara Multer-Wellin—as well as members of the orchestra featured in the film, including representatives from the nonprofit Me2. The discussion will explore the therapeutic impact of music, the importance of community-based mental health initiatives, and the lived experiences of those portrayed in the film.

The film’s patient-centered, community-centered, and longitudinal narrative provides a compelling framework for clinical providers to deepen their understanding of mental health. Through its humanistic storytelling, Orchestrating Change invites reflection, challenges stigma, and promotes a more compassionate approach to care.

Participants will leave with enhanced insight into the role of creative expression in mental health recovery and a renewed commitment to fostering inclusive, stigma-free environments in clinical practice.

As shared across the United States on PBS stations, the film is a winner of the Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media. The American Library Association & Media Round Table voted it “One of the Top Twelve Notable Films for Adults.” The film screening has been showcased by Public Broadcasting System (PBS), American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting, American Public Health Annual Conference, Case Managers Society of America, Guardian Nurses Healthcare Advocates, Mental Health Assoc. of New Jersey, Schizophrenia Society of Canada, Several NAMI chapters, International Society of Music Educators Annual Conference, Friends of the Semel Institute/ UCLA, UMass Mind Program, The Los Angeles Department of Mental Health.

“Little did I know I would watch one of the most enlightening and moving documentaries I have ever seen: Orchestrating Change. What a beautiful, life-affirming, joyful film! I was tearful on and off throughout.” PBS Viewer

This event is made possible through the generous support of the Lawrence S. Friedman Endowment for Population Health. We gratefully acknowledge this sponsorship, which honors Dr. Friedman’s enduring commitment to equitable care for all. His visionary leadership championed the destigmatization of mental, social, medical, and demographic diversity, and this program reflects his values by fostering inclusive dialogue and advancing understanding in mental health care.
