Overview

Healthcare application of artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how research and healthcare delivery are performed. Today, clinicians, researchers, and administrators lack adequate visibility and knowledge to the questions at hand that pose the most risk in terms of access, fairness, transparency, trustworthiness, and performance. Here, we plan to engage a broad community and ask the right ethical questions that lead to better, smarter, and more equitably applied healthcare AI in delivery and research.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Apply ethical frameworks to evaluate the development and deployment of AI technologies in healthcare, with attention to fairness, accountability, and patient autonomy.
  2. Assess sources of bias in healthcare AI systems, including data quality and algorithmic design, and propose strategies to mitigate their impact on clinical decision-making.
  3. Recognize privacy-preserving technologies and explain their role in protecting patient data while enabling responsible AI-driven innovation.
  4. Evaluate the impact of AI on the patient-clinician relationship, incorporating sociological and psychological perspectives to support compassionate, human-centered care.
  5. Integrate interdisciplinary insights from philosophy, engineering, clinical practice, and ethics to inform the safe, equitable, and effective implementation of AI tools in healthcare settings.

Accreditation

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine designates this for a maximum of 7.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAPA: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 7.00 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.

Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (report up to 7.00 hours of credit and list "CME Category 1" as the provider number).

Pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing education for pharmacists' coursework which meets the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and is accepted as continuing education by the Medical Board of California.

Psychologists: The California Board of Psychology recognizes and accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ for license renewal. Psychologists outside of California should check with their state and local boards to ensure that ACCME accredited activities are acceptable for renewal.

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA): This activity contributes to the CME component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s redesigned Maintenance of Certification in AnesthesiologyTM (MOCA®) program, known as MOCA 2.0®. Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org,
for a list of all MOCA 2.0 requirements.

American Board of Pathology (ABPath): The activity has been registered to offer credit in the American Board of Pathology’s Continuing Certification program on activity materials. This Lifelong Learning (CME) activity enables the participant to earn up to 7.00.

American Board of Surgery (ABS): Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME requirement of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.

American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS): Successful completion of this CME activity enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery’s Maintenance of Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABTS credit.
