Overview

This cutting-edge program is designed to provide the basic, intermediate, and advanced principles of superficial head and neck anatomy and surgery for those interested in dermatological surgery. Each participant will utilize fresh cadaver material (full body provided).

Lectures will be used for initial instruction and will be followed by increased time in the laboratory. In addition, the course will focus on local skin flaps and grafts as they pertain to the cutaneous surgeon. Small group workshops will give participants an opportunity to problem solve with the outstanding faculty we have assembled.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Anatomy lectures and prosection demonstration

  • Extended hands-on laboratory sessions by leading experts with good faculty to student ratio

  • Reconstruction techniques including flaps and grafts

  • Subspecialty faculty including plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, facial plastic & reconstructive surgery, head and neck surgery, dermatologic surgery, hand surgery, podiatry

  • Case-based problem-solving sessions: small group sessions using multiple slide images to problem-solve a wide variety of facial defects

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Integrate superficial head and neck anatomy into surgical planning to optimize safety and outcomes in dermatologic surgery.
  2. Select appropriate reconstructive techniques—including primary closure, skin grafts, and local flaps—based on defect characteristics and anatomic location.
  3. Perform fundamental dermatologic surgical techniques, including suturing, wound management, excisions, and flap design, in clinical and simulated settings.
  4. Design reconstructive approaches for key anatomic and cosmetic subunits (e.g., nose, eyelid, ear, perioral region, hand, and foot).
  5. Develop management strategies for perioperative considerations, including anesthesia, hemostasis, medications, and potential complications.
  6. Integrate emerging techniques and clinical decision-making strategies to improve outcomes in dermatologic and reconstructive surgery.
