Overview
This interactive one-day live activity will present cutting-edge new information for improving assessment and management of patients with gastrointestinal conditions, and place recent advances in context of current assessment and management paradigms. Topics include: • Strategies for screening for pancreatic cancer in high risk individuals • Best practices for management of acute and chronic pancreatitis • Management of eosinophilic esophagitis • Approach to evaluation and treatment of fecal incontinence and urgency • Fecal microbiota transmission and bacterial manipulation for treatment of c difficile and other GI disorders • Pharmacologic strategies for weight loss • Palliative care for individuals with end stage liver disease • Weight loss and non alcoholic fatty liver disease • Applications of endoscopic ultrasound for liver disease • Novel therapies for inflammatory bowel disease • Strategies for addressing pouchitis • Hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes • Novel approaches to management of esophageal motility disorders • Current breakthroughs for irritable bowel syndrome The format includes keynote presentations by internationally known guest speakers, short, evidence-based updates by UC San Diego faculty, and interactive presentations and panel discussions of challenging cases. Optional learning lunches with the experts will be available to discuss cases and learning about state of the art approaches to GI and liver diseases.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Review the risks and benefits of proton pump inhibitors
  2. Identify treatment approaches for refractory H pylori infections
  3. Discuss best approaches for evaluating occult gastrointestinal bleeding
  4. Develop an understanding of how cannabis can affect gastrointestinal function and symptoms
  5. Discuss how to implement and choose between biologic therapies for management of crohns disease
  6. Explain the optimal approach for managing hepatorenal syndrome with terlipressin
  7. Identify the novel therapies for ulcerative colitis
  8. Recall the new systems for classifying fatty liver disease
  9. Identify novel therapeutics for metabolic associated steatohepatitis
  10. Discuss the management techniques for achalasia
  11. Identify the best approaches for polypectomy techniques

Accreditation

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA: The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAPA: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 6.50 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.

BRN: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (report up to 6.50 hours of credit and list "CME Category 1" as the provider number).

Pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing education for pharmacists coursework which meets the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and is accepted as continuing education by the Medical Board of California.

Psychologists: The California Board of Psychology recognizes and accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ for license renewal. Psychologists outside of California should check with their state and local boards to ensure that ACCME accredited activities are acceptable for renewal.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM): Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6.50 Medical Knowledge points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
